Discharge calculatorAs an important first step within feasibility studies and design evaluations nomograms and screening equations have been developed with the following elements: · Elaboration of a discharge calculator · Elaboration of a density calculator
The discharge calculator computes the effluent properties at the discharge point. It allows the input of up to three different effluents, which are merged at the discharge point. This is to allow the consideration of DeSal-effluents blended with other effluents like treated wastewater or cooling waters from the process itself or a cogeneration plant.
Furthermore the calculator allows to compute ambient characteristics. It therefore requires the input of basic ambient parameters (density and bed slope) and computes the characteristical discharge parameters to analyze and interpret a specific discharge condition. The calculater already includes design considerations regarding the discharge geometry and allows to compute a first set of design alternatives. These alternatives then need to be studied within the numerical model applications.
Results are the final effluent flowrate, the effluent temperature and salinity, and the resulting density. One can easily add also effluent constituent concentrations to the computation. The calculator is programmed in a MS Excel spreadsheet and available for download

Once the effluent characteristics (i.e. salinity and temperature) are known or calculated out of the merged flows and characteristics a density calculator based on the typical characteristics of brine effluents and coastal waters in the considered project regions computes the effluent densities. This calculator is included in the discharge calculators.
